Hebrew Bible assignment part 3

For Monday/Tuesday (Sept. 17/18):

Readings in Genesis

Skip Chapter 10
Read Chapter 11:1-9
Read Chapters 12-19

I will not be collecting a written assignment, but I expect you to take notes and come prepared with comments and questions. Again, consider: What lessons and ideas should I take from these stories? What do the authors of these stories think is important--both to individuals and to the culture?

Hebrew Bible assignment: Part 2

For class on Wednesday/Thursday, read chapters 5-9 in Genesis. Type up (12 pt., serif) responses to these two prompts:

1. What questions do you have for the authors of these stories? What seems strange, unexplained, or confusing to you?

2. Going from our conversation about the first assignment: What do you think each story is about? That is, what idea or "moral" should I take from each story? Chapter 5 isn't a "story," but what do you think is an important idea an audience would take from that chapter? The other chapters form two separate stories: Noah and the Flood; the children of Noah.

Hebrew Bible reading assignment

Before you read anything, I want you to write:

1. What do you know about Adam and Eve? As in class, I just want you to think about what images or memories you have of the Adam and Eve account.

Read chapters 1-4 of Genesis. (The link to the chapters of the Hebrew Bible is in the column on the right of this web page.) Some of these chapters concern Adam and Eve, but not all.

After reading:

2. What surprised you or was unfamiliar to you about the story (or stories) involving Adam and Eve?

3. Also, did anything surprise you or seem odd in the account from chapter 1 of the creation of the world?

Please type this up in accordance with the requirements.

Due on Tuesday/Wednesday, Sept. 11/12.
